Broadway’s biggest night has evolved into a fashion event that rivals the Oscars. The brightest stars showed up for the 2018 Tony Awards in styles regal and romantic. With more and more household-name celebrities from TV and film taking a turn on Broadway, designers are turning up the style factor on the Radio City Music Hall red carpet. A Who’s Who of theatre showed off looks that earned applause at the Tonys. Here are some of the night’s best.
Kerry Washington In Atelier Versace
Kerry Washington arrived in full swagger wearing a silver lamé Atelier Versace jumpsuit that was both breathtakingly sexy and fashion forward. Cut-outs, Swarovski crystal embellishments and a floor-sweeping train made this the most dramatic look of the night. Some critics swooned with delight. Others were less than thrilled and said the risk did not pay off.
Claire Danes in Valentino
Claire Danes continued to mine a rich vein of maternity style with her Tony Awards look. Her Valentino Pre-Fall 2018 gown was a statement piece in leopard spots and rose-pink and black sequins. Tiers add playfulness and structure to the classically luxe gown, while her heavily kohl-rimmed eyes produced an unexpected edge.
Tiffany Haddish in Michael Kors
The 38-year-old Girls Trip actress went glam in a sparkling silver Michael Kors jumpsuit and Chopard jewelry for the awards show. Hers was one of the favorites at the “bring-your-A-game” fashion event that the Tonys have become. Oh, sure, critics quibbled a little about tightness through the hips and the hem they said was maybe a half-inch too long. But they concluded that no one is better suited for this kind of fun, disco-fabulous, silver paisley jumpsuit look than Tiffany.
Condola Rashad In Carolina Herrera
Condola went full-on sweeping Hollywood gorgeous and looked like the star of a period piece movie. She’s always been famous for making a splash at the Tony Awards, and she did not disappoint this year in a Carolina Herrera off the shoulder, silk faille red gown for Fall 2018. Carolina Herrera scored big in one month with a celebrity double-header. The Duchess of Sussex wore the designer for the Queen’s 92nd birthday celebration just three weeks after that little wedding you may have heard about.
Tina Fey in Thom Browne
Tina Fey dazzled in her Thom Browne custom gown that rendered a stunning look with both event and client in mind. The designer is best known for reinventing classics with preppy detailing, unique proportions and silhouettes. Those who follow Thom Browne might have been looking for quirky signature details, but he rendered classic evening glamour with no tricks. Fey looked amazing in his sequin silver Fair Isle embroidered tromp l’oeil gown with ostrich feathers and beaded fringe.
