Want to turn up your inner glow? Try adding healthier ingredients to your routine. That’s easier said than done, since there’s no one organization regulating natural or organic standards within the beauty industry, in the United Stated or internationally (our handy guide to all the labels, here).
We’ve done the due diligence for you by rounding up some of our favorites in organic beauty, and they’re the real deal. No green washing or deceptive labeling here!
1Revolution Organics
While brands can claim to be “organic” by having just one ingredient that makes the grade, you’ll find at least an 85 percent certified organic formula in all of Revolution Organics products. We’re fans of the Freedom Glow Beauty Balm that warms eyes, lips and cheeks with a pretty flush of rosy color. Coconut oil helps repair the lipid barrier of your skin (and smells yummy!) while honey helps lock moisture in.

2Meow Meow Tweet
We die for these darling organic soaps from the small batch natural apothecary known as Meow Meow Tweet, based in Brooklyn, New York. The refreshing yet elegant scents are made from organic plant oils and wild botanicals, blended with steam-distilled essential oils for the purest fragrance. From grapefruit mint to fennel orange to lavender lemongrass and even a bar for your furry four-legged friend, you’ll be hard pressed to find these spirited concoctions anywhere else.
3Intelligent Nutrients
If you’re new to organic beauty, lip color is a smart place to start since we inevitably ingest some product every day. Created by the founder of Aveda, Horst Rechelbacher, Intelligent Nutrients bears the USDA Organic label of the highest certified standard in the category. Try the gluten-free lipgloss with extracts of cranberry, orange and açai that boasts food-level safety and even nutritional antioxidant value. Now that’s a tastier thought.
Intelligent Nutrients Certified Organic Lip Delivery Antioxidant Gloss, $25
4Lurk
You won’t find irritating alcohol in any of Lurk’s bottles; each scent is carefully blended by hand in New York and uses only pure essential oils in a base of organic jojoba. We were swept away by sensual scents with memorable notes like earthy rose, warm sandalwood, fresh jasmine and sweet bergamot. Tip: Since there are no preservatives in the formula, it’s best to keep the fragrance out of direct sunlight and enjoy it within a year after opening.
5Nourish Organic
This Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania-based brand takes organic to the max: It’s the first full beauty line made of completely organic ingredients, and all products sport the USDA Organic label. Check out the anti-aging face serum that deeply hydrates with Moroccan argan oil and rosehip, or the pH-balanced hand wash that guards against dish pan hands with quinoa protein, aloe and shea butter. The packaging is among the sleekest in the category, and looks chic on the shelf.

Handmade with all-natural formulas and earth-friendly packaging, Sumbody offers a packed line of skin, makeup, hair and nail treats. “People tell us everyday that they’ve tried everything on earth—but then I ask, ‘Have you tried the earth itself?’ ” says brand founder Deborah Burnes. “Things like clay, charcoal and oats are amazing for your skin!” Try the deliciously gritty yet gentle body scrub with organic brown sugar cane, cocoa butter and pistachio oil.
7Ava Anderson Non-Toxic
Founded by a teen determined to wear only the safest ingredients, Ava Anderson Non-Toxic offers a full line of organic products that are entirely synthetic chemical-free. Even the mascara boasts a natural formula that is nutrient-rich with organic aloe, vegetable-based wax and mineral color for soft lashes that hold curl. And as we’ve covered earlier, we’ve found that the organic deodorant with baking soda and tea tree and peppermint oils really works.

8Pristine Beauty
Founder Blaire Kessler created this all-natural line to help rehab skin and strands after surviving breast cancer at the age of 30. The reviving serum nurtures overworked hair and scalps back to health with organic coconut oil and sesame seed oil, while jojoba oil eliminates product build-up that may be preventing absorption of treatment. Rosacea and eczema sufferers may especially appreciate the intensive facial crème that soothes troubles away with organic sunflower seed oil and essential fatty acids.

Pristine Beauty Hooray for Brallywood Butta Luxe Intensive Facial Crème, $38
9Rahua
Antioxidant-filled Rahua oil comes from the Amazon rainforest, and is the star ingredient in this line created by New York stylist Fabian Lliguin, a native Ecuadorian of Quechua descent who came upon the precious oil while visiting his home country in the 1990s. Try the organic, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that gently cleanse with quinoa and coconut, while revitalizing with green tea leaf extract and aloe. Lliquin says the duo is ideal for color-treated hair.

10Neal’s Yard Remedies
Brits sure know how to make a beauty product. This certified organic import features soothing damask rose, antioxidant white tea and calming aloe vera, to gently remove even waterproof makeup on the delicate skin around the eyes. Contact lens wearers will appreciate that it’s oil-free, and we love the tri-peptides and hydrating glycerin for anti-aging benefits. Check out the rest of the line for even more natural goodness.
11SpaRitual
Organic nail polish is tricky, but SpaRitual comes closest to fitting the bill while delivering top quality results. Formulated without controversial chemicals DBP, toluene and formaldehyde, the vegan ingredients are sourced from vegetables instead of petroleum, and brand founder Shel Pink says that ecocert-certified bamboo has been used in some shades. Vivid hues (like the new pictured spring collection) come in rubberized cap bottles that help you hold a steady hand.
12Nvey Eco
Hesitant that organic makeup won’t perform up to par with the traditional stuff? Aussie brand Nvey Eco is looking to prove it’s possible. Founder and beauty industry veteran Rohan Widdison focuses on merging certified organic ingredients and green principles with fun high fashion trends. Vivid eyeshadow and blush are made with soothing botanicals like chamomile and jojoba, while the new Cream Deluxe Flawless Finish Foundation is chock-full of vitamins.
13John Masters Organics
Stylist John Masters was so concerned with chemicals that he opened Manhattan’s first “clean-air salon” in the 90s dedicated to toxic-free treatments, and launched an eponymous haircare line that embraces plant ingredients, fair trade principles and eco-conscious packaging. The new Green Tea & Calendula Leave-in Conditioning Mist nourishes hair with 10 certified organic botanicals to eliminate frizz, add brilliant shine and build volume naturally with guar gum—a vegetable related to the pea family.
