YouBeauty: Looking to the new year, how can we use astrology to guide our beauty decisions?
Ophira Edut: The planets are always moving and they visit different parts of your chart, houses, which are associated with different parts of your life. Some houses are associated with wellness, beauty, some are asspcoiated with career. It’s really about timing. Some months, the energy might be more homebodied—time to stay home more, nuture yourself, go to the spa. Others are better for being more glamorous, going out there and dressing up. Others are better for detoxing. You also need to pay attention to the moons. Each month, there is a new moon and a full moon. New moons are great for starting things. Everybody will have new moon in health and wellness house once a year and that’s a good time to. No matter what house, new is great to begin things. Full is like a spotlight, good time to examine habits and priorities.
When’s the best time to get a haircut or make any other big appearance changes?: In 2015, Jupiter is going to be in Leo until August 11 — that happens every 12 years. Jupiter is about trying new things and taking new risks; Leo is the sign of glamour and expression. So it’s a great time to try a bolder color or cut. Try new makeup, glam it up! Kylie Jenner is a Leo, and so are Cara Delevingne, Madonna, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez. On August 11, Jupiter goes into Virgo, which is a sign of health and more eco-consciousness, more natural. So in the fall, it’ll all be about being more natural.Every year and a half Venus goes retrograde, meaning it slows down — that is a time not to experiment. This year it’s in retrograde from July 25-September 6, so consider that a blackout date for any appearance changes. Do not chop off all your hair to get a new look for fall. Cosmetic procedures are not advised during this time either.

Any tips on shopping for new products in the new year?: Saturn, the planet that makes us more serious, is in Sagittarius. This means we should be focusing on global issues. Look for sustainable brands, look into the history and ethics of the company. The beauty industry drives the economy in so many ways, so now’s the time to put your money where your morals are. Look into lines that gives back, recycle, participate in social giving, or give back to the world in some way. Finding a way to do that with your daily routine would be great for all signs to do.
What makeup colors should we experiment with?: Leo is a really regal sign, so 2015 is all about royal colors. Pantone’s color of the year is marsala, a rich wine color—definitely a very Jupiter and Leo color. Use golds, reds, rich colors for those first eight months. When Jupiter goes into Virgo on August 11, switch to neutrals, white, beiges, navys, grays, and more natural products. But go as wild as you want with colors and patterns until the fall.

What hairstyle should we go for?: Leo rules the lion’s mane, so it’s kind of a “big hair don’t care” year. Or you could follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Lawrence who is a Leo, but not during retrograde because you’ll regret it and cry for months. Go for bolder and brighter if you go short. Leo is about drama—even if it’s short, it shouldn’t be boring.
What beauty resolution should each sign make for the new year?: Fire signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius tend to take more style risks already, so they can keep doing more of what they do. The earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, might try a softer look, since they tend to dress a little more polished, corporate, put together. Water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces should try being a little more bold and polished, since they tend to dress in flowier clothes and go for comfort over style—if you normally opt for loose waves, go for the blowout, or something with a little more style and edge to it. Air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius already have sort of a funky style, and should play even more with contrast and mix things that wouldn’t normally be put together, which they do well. For Earth and water signs, breaking away and tryings something different will be good for them in the new year.

Can we use astrology to forecast health in the new year?: In 2015, people are going to look for ways to have healthy decadence. Jupiter and Leo have big appetites for pleasure. This year is going to be all about healthy dinner parties—bringing people together and making health more of a communal and fun thing. Integrating playtime with wellness more. There’s also going to be a focus on wellness techniques from around the world. We’ll be moving away from pharmaceuticals and words we can’t pronounce, looking for interesting anti-aging techniques from different cultures, that kind of thing. Just more of a worldly touch to the wellness space.
What about our sex lives? Can we expect a good year?: I think there’s going to be a lot more communication around sex. Because of some of the things that have happened this year, like awareness about campus rape, femininism being reclaimed, people are going to now become a little more sophisticated about how they go about it. Even though sex is still sex, and you kind of just want to grab your partner, people are going to apply what they learned and be more conscious about that kind of thing, and asking their partners what they like. [Editor’s note: Coincidental that “Fifty Shades of Gray” comes out in 2015? We think not!]
