We’ve all heard the phrase: abs are made in the kitchen. That means that to achieve those six-pack abs you’ve always dreamed of, you need to do more than just workout every day. It’s no secret that what you eat plays a massive role in getting fit and the same goes for your abs.

Carbs can play a significant role in causing that extra fat on your belly, but that certainly doesn’t mean you need to cut out carbs entirely to get abs. It’s about eating the right foods, foods that will fuel your body and give you energy.

If you don’t eat carbs, your body won’t have any energy. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which can be used as energy. Without carbs, we would have no energy to go to the gym, thus leading to no abs.

So basically if you’re trying to get abs, you need carbs! But that doesn’t mean you can eat endless amounts of pasta and bread- you need to eat the right carbs.

Simple carbohydrates are made up of simple sugars and are digested by the body quickly. Complex carbs are high in fiber and are digested more slowly, so they keep you fuller for longer and keep your insulin levels stable. If you’re trying to get fit, you should be eating more complex carbs and less simple carbs.

So, what foods are complex carbs?

Starchy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are great examples of complex carbs. Other food sources of carbs are legumes, which are low in sugar and provide sustainable energy. If you’re itching for bread or pasta, choose whole grain options. Buckwheat, brown rice, barley, and quinoa are all great healthy options for bread and pasta.

Complex carbs fuel your body for longer so you can smash out a great workout in the gym. They take longer to digest so you’ll feel less of the need to snack in between meals. Complex carbs can even help in weight loss. Remember, carbs are your friend- not your enemy!!! Fuel your body with the right foods and go to the gym regularly and you’ll see those abs come in in no time.
