A recent study out of UC San Diego and Yale looked at nearly 1.5 million markers of gene variation across almost 2,000 subjects, and found that friends share about 1 percent of their genes, making them as genetically similar as fourth cousins (people who share great-great-great grandparents). The results, the researchers say, do not reflect a tendency to befriend people of similar background, but represent a novel finding that people with certain genetic similarities (like sense of smell) and complementary differences (like immunities) gravitate toward one another.
