You obsess over what you put on your skin (pat yourself on the back, it’s important!), but what about what you spray on it? Believe it or not, the chemicals in your beloved fragrance may be a source of toxic chemicals, and they go relatively unchecked. The FDA doesn’t make perfume companies parse out every single ingredient, like they do with products like food for example, which means a parade of chemicals can hide under the word “fragrance” on a label. The three P’s are likely offenders: Phthalates, parabens and polycyclic/nitro musk, all chemicals with hormone-disrupting abilities linked to breast cancer, birth defects and the like. The fix? Opt for all-natural or organic scents that skip the hazardous chemicals and pesticides—just make sure that means the whole blend, not just a few natural ingredients here or there!
