Here’s some good news to keep in mind: when your friends tell you you’ll move on and find someone new, they’re more right than you may think. Love can be compared to an addiction… quite literally. According to a recent review in the journal Review of General Psychology, the human brain is fully equipped to fall out of love and move on, even if in the wake of heartbreak you don’t think you ever will. Study author Brian Boutwell, Ph.D., associate professor of criminology and criminal justice and associate professor of epidemiology at Saint Louis University, said that previous research has suggested that we have a mental mechanism that helps get us through tough times in life. He explained, “It suggests people will recover; the pain will go away with time. There will be a light at the end of the tunnel.”
