Mama always told you to take responsibility for your actions. What she didn’t tell you: Your longevity depends on it! Research proves that having personal responsibilities—even something as simple as watering a plant—can have wondrous effects on your health. In one study, nursing home patients were either encouraged to pick a plant to care for, or a movie to see, or a staff member simply assigned one to them. Three weeks later, the ones given personal responsibility were more active, alert and social than the other group. Even more astonishing? A year and a half later, twice as many in the first group were still alive!
