Having a baby—especially if you breastfeed—decreases your overall chance of getting breast cancer. But the risk goes up before it goes down. The likelihood of getting breast cancer stays higher for 10 years after every pregnancy, peaking between five and seven years after giving birth. So, during that post-baby window, be extra vigilant about any lumps or irregularities in your breasts.
