New U.S. surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy dropped a political bomb on “CBS This Morning” when he made the (fairly obvious) statement that marijuana “can be helpful” for some medicial conditions. While not outwardly endorsing marijuana for medical purposes, Murthy later released a statement that said “Marijuana policy — and all public health policies —should be driven by science.”Twenty-three states have legalized marijuana for medical use and four states have legalized recreational use. But marijuana’s llisting as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act means it has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse” as far as the federal government is concerned.As Huffington Post reported, high profile doctors including President Obama’s previous choice for surgeon general Sanjay Gupta have come out in support of medical marijuana.
