The founders of Ben & Jerry’s recently told HuffPost Live (while eating ice cream on set, natch) that pot-flavored ice cream is not something they’d ever rule out. Co-founder Ben Cohen added “makes sense to me, combine your pleasures!”
The other co-founder Jerry Greenfield was a bit more tentative about the decision. Still, Greenfield said he “thinks legalizing marijuana is a wonderful thing” and that “if it were my decision [to create cannabis flavored ice cream], we’d already be doing it, but fortunately we have wiser heads at the company that figure those things out.”
Ben & Jerry’s is famous for their extensive range of flavors. Already having some seemingly marijuana-themed flavors on their roster such as Satisfy my Bowl, Half Baked and even Dave Matthews Band Magic Brownies Encore Edition, it’s only logical that marijuana flavored ice cream would be their next step.
According to government data, 23 states and the District of Columbia have laws that legalize marijuana for either recreational or medical use. Four states (Alaska, Washington, Colorado, and Oregon) have even officially legalized marijuana solely for recreational use. With the legalization of recreational marijuana quickly spreading throughout the country, it’s a smart business venture to begin catering to this population (and their munchies). Cannabis-infused ice cream would be that step in the right direction to boost sales.
Since a medical marijuana dispensary in California called Crème De Canna, is now serving marijuana ice cream containing about an eighth of cannabis to anyone with a marijuana card, Ben & Jerry’s should start to seriously consider the possibilities within this market. Considering their openly accepting attitude towards weed, I’m thinking this will happen sooner rather than later. Stoners rejoice!
