“Girls” star Gaby Hoffman, the most well-cast “zany friend” of all time, spent a work event chatting to a reporter from People about eating her newborn’s placenta.“Placenta, placenta, placenta. Just eat that shit up, and it does a girl good!” said Hoffman at the show’s season four premiere party. Placenta is believed to have extraordinary nutritional value and Hoffman really wants us to know about it:
“I made smoothies out of it for three weeks. I had a home birth, so my midwife and my doula took it and cut it up into 20 pieces and froze it, and every day, I put it in a blender with strawberries and blueberries, and guava juice and a banana, and I drank that shit up.”
FWIW, other celebs have advocated eating placenta, including “Mad Men” star January Jones and Holly Madison from “Girls Next Door.” Experts say it may balance hormones that help fight postpartum depression, while others (like Hoffman, loudly) say it aids milk production. Either way, if you’re interested in a recipe besides the Gaby Hoffman Super Smoothie, here’s a tasty recipe for placenta lasagna — yum, yum:Placenta LasagneIngredients:
- 1 fresh, ground, or minced placenta
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 sliced cloves garlic
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1/2 diced onion
- 2 Tbsp tomato paste, or 1 whole tomato
