On the heels of a new documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” Courtney Love gives the final word about her heroin use while pregnant with daughter Frances Bean Cobain: she did it.Love has a spotty track record with discussing heroin: in a 1992 Vanity Fair profile (dug up by the Huffington Post) in which she is quoted as using heroin for “couple of months” during the pregnancy. When the profile came out, Love immediately denied all claims. The article led to Cobain and Love losing the first of multiple custody battles over Frances Bean. A 2011 article in The Fix quoted Love as saying that she used heroin in the first three weeks of her pregnancy before she realized she ws pregnant.In “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” Love admits to using heroin while pregnant with Frances Bean in an on-camera interview. “I used it once then stopped. I knew she would be fine,” she apparently says in the doc. Well, case closed.The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists notes of heroin (an opioid) usage during pregnancy:
“During pregnancy, chronic untreated heroin use is associated with an increased risk of fetal growth restriction, abruptio placentae, fetal death, [and] preterm labor … These effects may be related to the repeated exposure of the fetus to opiod withdrawal as well as the effects of withdrawal on placental function.”
Expectant mothers are encouarged to taper off their use of opiods slowly, so as not to put the fetus at risk.Clearly, Love and her daughter have an open line of communication about Love’s drug-using past: Frances Bean attended the screening at the Sundance Film Festival ealiret this week is even attached as Executive Producer of the film to seal the deal. The documentary is the first authorized film to be made about Cobain and was made with cooperation from Love, Frances Bean, and the Cobain family.
