Like a fine wine, supermodel Carmen Dell’Orefice seems to have only gotten better with age. At 83 years old, this icon is still walking down fashion show runways and working for top designers, after seven full decades in the fashion industry.
Most recently, Carmen graced a special edition cover of New You magazine, and she looks absolutely stunning. Wearing all black, Carmen’s high cheekbones, sultry eyes and voluminous grey hair are rightfully emphasized, giving us a new face for beauty.
Carmen began modeling when she was only 13, posing for Salvador Dalí. Fast forward to the present, where her career is still in full swing, even walking in Digital Fashion Week for Max. Tan in Singapore last fall. This isn’t just some elderly woman hobbling down the runway with a walker — she confidently sways, almost floating, across the runway with a grace that I can only wish to one day grow into.
In an industry obsessed with youth and perfection, Carmen declares that she “stood up for age”, and anyone looking at her New You feature can confirm the truth in her testament. I mean seriously, this woman is the epitome of class and elegance.
With this cover, in addition to Joan Didion modeling for Céline, and Sports Illustrated recently featuring it’s first plus-size model in its upcoming issue, could the fashion industry be taking us in a different direction? We sure hope so!
