In 1995, a study in California showed that women paid $1,351 annually more than men when purchasing similar products, such as deodorant, that are packaged and marketed differently to each gender. The Daily Share has compared the prices of similar female- and male-branded items today to see whether the “women’s tax” stands 20 years later. (Spoiler alert: It still exists.)
Women’s products regularly cost more than men’s — sometimes quite a lot more, in fact. In certain instances, such as haircuts, it could make sense for a more difficult service to charge more money. But as the video reveals, when a woman brings a unisex shirt into the dry cleaner, she could potentially get charged more than a man simply for being a woman.
