By now, you’re probably aware of the legal battle surrounding the artist, Kesha. If not, here’s a snippet of what’s going on. After years of suffering and turmoil, the singer finally got her first day in court regarding allegations against producer, Dr. Luke. The singer is accusing the producer of subjecting her to sexual and drug related abuse and is seeking to be released from her Sony contract where she’d have to work with him. Well, it seems the judge wasn’t buying it because her request for a preliminary junction was denied.
Now that you’re caught up on what’s going on, here’s why you should probably care.
Why You Should Care
For one, this sheds light on the hush hush issue of sexual assault. It happens all the time in every day life as well as in the entertainment industry and shouldn’t be a taboo subject.
The next reason is the victim shaming aspect. Victim shaming occurs when the victim of rape is held entirely responsible for whatever wrong happened. In this case, Kesha is undergoing victim shaming.
Celebs Who Are Behind It
Something good is coming out of this situation. Celebs are pouring out their support for Kesha, making the topic okay to talk about. Here are some celebs who are behind the #FreeKesha movement.
Lena Dunham – Girls creator had some pretty striking comments about the situation. She told her list of newsletter subscribers that what has happened to Kesha is the horrible truth of how the American justice system fails women by not protecting them from their named abusers.
Taylor Swift – Probably one of the most popular supporters, Swift donated $250,000 to Kesha in order to help her with any legal fees she may be facing.
Kelly Clarkson – Clarkson has worked with Dr. Luke herself and obviously he put a bad taste in her mouth too. The singer took to Twitter and said, “Trying 2 not say anything since I can’t say anything nice about a person… so this is me not talking about Dr. Luke.”
Other celeb supporters include: Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Jack Antonoff, Lorde, Walle, and Ariana Grande.
That’s everyone else’s take on it. What about yours? What do you think?
