The ultra-glamourous event invites celebs and unknowns alike to push fashion boundaries. Some making appearances in statement naked dresses already are well known to fans in their home countries. The rest of us might need an introduction to these stunners. Here’s a quick scorecard on women who are vying for attention in the Cannes spotlight and succeeding.
Nieves Álvarez is a Spanish model and television presenter who turned up in Elie Saab Couture. She first captured attention as a finalist at the 1992 Elite Look of the Year model search held by by Elite Model Management. She’s since gone one to present the Televisión Española show Flash moda.
Araya Hargate returned to designers Ralph & Russo who last year swathed the five-months pregnant actress in a gown and coordinating silk cape covered with crystals and ostrich feathers. The 2017 Hargate ensemble defied rules about pregnancy dressing and piled on the bling, feathers, and finery. This year Ralph & Russo went in an opposite direction for the Thai actress and bared Hargate’s stunning figure in a gown that was a filmy transparent layer draped over a body suit.
Deepika Padukone is one of the best-paid actresses in India. She has starred in a series of Bollywood romantic comedies and some of India’s highest-grossing films. She has designed her own line of clothing, and she is a celebrity endorser for brands and products. Her choice of Zuhair Murad design, which featured a cape and plunging neckline, has been compared to the gown worn by Araya Hargate.
Tallia Storm is a 19-year-old native of Scotland who is carving out a career as a singer. She recently released a brand new single titled You Love Me You Care. Her black net gown at one Cannes event was reminiscent of the navel-baring, exotic green Versace silk chiffon creation J. Lo famously wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards. The gown she wore on the red carpet was designed by Jean-Paul Benielli.
Victoria Bonya began her career in 2001, when she represented Russia at the Miss Earth beauty pageant. Today she is a television presenter and radio host. She’s also starred in popular Russian music videos. The 38-year-old turned heads in a show-stopping, aquamarine gown by Maison Esthere Maryline which featured delicate embroidery, a dramatic train and an almost waist-high split at the front.
Chantel Jeffries, who grew up in a U.S. military family, made her big screen debut with a small role, as a character named “Fawn,” in 2016’s A Perfect Match. She is the multi-talented musician-model-DJ who played a set at Coachella and was spotted at the music festival with The Weeknd. This was after he was seen kissing Bella Hadid at Coachella and before he was observed kissing Bella at Cannes, so who knows? Anyway, Chantel wore two naked dresses at Cannes: A strappy metallic gown and a sheer white lace dress.
