Lizzo has taken over the world. She released “Truth Hurts” back in 2017, but it recently gained high praise as it quickly reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, which made her the first black woman to hit No. 1 in 2019. All of her lyrics are the definition of empowerment and self-love, and all of her songs will make you feel like you can conquer the world. In a short amount of time, Lizzo has become a figure that women all over the world feel like they can relate to. She’s honest in her own life experiences, something that is not often found with celebrities.
Last week, Lizzo and Phoebe Robinson discussed “Truth Hurts,” Lizzo’s success, and everything in between.
“I laugh a lot. I giggle a lot. I’m silly. That’s my personality,” Lizzo said. “I do want to be intentional about my joy, but I will say I also have to be just as intentional about my ‘not joy.’ Because there’s a balance to it, and I owe it to people who follow me and my story to be completely honest.”
A balance between happiness and sadness is something we all can relate to, and hearing that comes from an icon like Lizzo makes us feel better about our own situations. She’s always honest about her life issues and struggles with mental health.
“Yes, I like to be happy, but also let me share what it’s like when I’m going through it,” Lizzo revealed. “When I’m cramping, or if I’m heartbroken, or if I’m feeling actually drained of chemicals, or if I don’t have enough serotonin in my body. I want to express that. I don’t want to hide. I’ve never really hidden anything about myself.”
Lizzo wants to make people feel good about themselves, and her music sure does an excellent job of doing that. Regardless of your race, gender, sexual orientation- whatever it may be, Lizzo wants you to feel confident in yourself and your abilities. She understands that her words and music can make an impact on society, and she wants that impact to be a positive one.
“Be patient with your journey and love yourself. I have to be patient with myself every f*cking day. Because yesterday is a different day than today.”
Lizzo will always be someone to look up to, and for that- we thank her.
