If you haven’t heard it already, summer 2019 is a hot girl summer. And what is a hot girl summer, you ask? Megan Thee Stallion, a rapper, is known for coining the term. She started the movement with the release of her album, Fever. The art on the album says “She’s thee HOT GIRL and she’s bringing THEE HEAT.” Which in turn got interpreted as the phrase ‘hot girl summer,’ which basically means you are living your best life this summer, being happy and confident in yourself.
Megan Thee Stallion described the movement as being “about women and men being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up their friends, doing you,” when asked about it on The Root. “You definitely have to be a person who can be the life of the party and just a bad bitch.”
The term is now the catchphrase of the summer, with girls, and boys, all over the world posting photos on Instagram and Twitter with the caption: hot girl summer. Celebrities like Jordyn Woods have even jumped on the hot girl summer bandwagon.
In a world where women are often put down, hot girl summer is meant to inspire women to lift each other. It’s not one thing exclusively. The phrase is intended to inspire women to be their best selves- whatever that might mean for them.
Megan Thee Stallion is planning on releasing a song about the phenomenon. After seeing the phrase’s wide success, artist Future decided to join in and announce his own #HotBoySummer playlist on Spotify. Will that ever compare to Megan Thee Stallion’s playlist? Definitely not.
It’s a hot girl summer! How are you celebrating?
