My new favorite Elle writer trolled the shit out of seemingly unstoppable young hearthrob Ansel Elgort in a new interview. Mickey Rapkin pushes Elgort to confess to a host of charming embarrasing moments. Number one: Shailene Woodley, queen of the all-natural woodspeople, once made Elgort a natural deodorant and he couldn’t figure out how to wear it. He says, “I didn’t really see how you could put it on. It was in a jar. I just didn’t like the idea of putting a cream on my armpits.”
The rest of the interview zeroes in on the 21-year-old’s love life in a way that he is probably as we speak being told never to allow again. Here are some of the best tidbits:
On high school girls:
“I love it when a girl is like, ‘I can’t hang out. I have to go to class.’ And I go pick her up and she’s all sweaty in a leotard with her hair in a bun. That’s the hottest thing ever.
On having a photographer father:
“I’d disappear into his darkroom for, like, an hour, looking for all the boobs I could find.”
On romance:
“I like romanticizing romance. I don’t know how open I’m supposed to be here.”
On losing his virginity:
“I was 14. I had no clue what I was doing, and neither did the girl. I didn’t even make the lighting good.”
On fame:
“Honestly, that’s how I’ve felt when I’ve been single and talking to girls. Like, This is who they want Ansel Elgort to be. I talk slowly. I stand up straight. I feel like, Yeah. They’re totally being charmed. It’s working. It’s working. But I don’t feel like I’m being myself.”
On his current girlfriend:
“Uh, when does this story come out? … But if you can find a girl who you can go to an EDM concert with, have a conversation with, who will sit on the couch and watch you play GTA for three hours—– and then you go to bed and have amazing sex? That should be your girlfriend.”
