2015 is going to be huge for Amy Schumer: season 3 of her show “Inside Amy Schumer” premieres, she’s hosting the MTV Movie Awards, and Judd Apatow-produced rom-com “Trainwreck” will be released. We all know Schumer can handle tasks like getting the word “pussy” uncensored on Comedy Central, but how does she respond when some jerkface calls her fat?
She had that opportunity, via Today.com, when writer Jeffrey Wells of blog Hollywood Elsewhere called her “chubby”:
“Director Judd Apatow is once again introducing a chubby, whipsmart, not conventionally attractive, neurotically bothered female comic to a mass audience — first Melissa McCarthy in ‘Bridesmaids’ (’11), then Lena Dunham in HBO’s ‘Girls’ (’12) and now Amy Schumer, the star and writer of ‘Trainwreck’ as well as the star of Comedy Central’s ‘Inside Amy Schumer.’ She’s obviously sharp and clever and funny as far as the woe-is-me, self-deprecating thing goes, but there’s no way she’d be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world.”
Harsh words from someone who doesn’t seem to live in the real world.

Schumer told USA Today that she “hadn’t read the thing.” (Good call on that one — nothing hurts a writer’s feelings more than not being read.) But she nonetheless went on to share a few photos of herself looking, well, not-so-chubby. She said, “From the bottom of my heart – I could not care less.”

While we appreciate Schumer’s light-hearted response, we’re not sure the best way to counteract fat-shaming is by saying, effectively, ‘I don’t care what you say but actually I’m a size six!’ While she does make a point that she’s not a size zero and she’s still made it in Hollywood, we still didn’t need to know her dress size.
In any case, Wells wrote a half-assed apology to Schumer (but not to Melissa McCarthy or Lena Dunham, who he also fat shamed). “She’s a first-class talent and deserves more respect than what I gave her. I know I’m not thinking wrong but I’m probably saying it wrong from time to time,” he wrote. “I wasn’t incorrect in saying that social attractiveness standards have changed over the past decade or so, largely due to the creations of one Judd Apatow and those who’ve climbed aboard his ferry boat.”
Lesson not quite learned, but at least it gives us an excuse to post the trailer for Schumer’s movie one more time. “Trainwreck” hits theaters on July 17, 2015.
