The change of season is a glaring signal that it’s time to switch up the beauty routine you’ve grown comfortable with over the past few months. As much as we love orange and fuchsia lipstick, we’re kind of ready to trade in the bold hues for some berries and reds.
Pulling from what we saw last season on the fall runways and celebs’ current go-to looks, we’ve rounded up the top fall beauty trends to rock this season.
1Low Ponytail
Whether sleek or slightly messy, a ponytail at the nape of the neck is more sophisticated and office-appropriate than the tight, high pony that’s more reminiscent of spin class. Try securing one with a flashy clip or hair cuff, like the one above on Lindsey Ellingson. We like Cara Metallic Cuff Ponytail Holders, $16 for a 2-pack.
2Half-Up Hair
The half-bun stays on-trend even as temps cool down. Think of it as a less permanent and girlier take on a mullet—business in front, party in the back. The fall runways showed half-up buns and ponytails, and celebs are still owning the look: Alessandra Ambrosio showed how elegant it can be (not just for the days you skip a shampoo) at the Venice Film Festival, and model Constance Jablonski (above) became our half-bun muse at New York Fashion Week.
3Red Lips
Nude lips stole the spotlight for a few seasons there, but as fall rolls in, it’s back to the classic red. Best part? The tried-and-true look works on any and all skintones, and swiping it on is the easiest way to spice up your look (even those boyfriend jeans and T-shirt). Try: Kevyn Aucoin The Matte Lip Color in Eternal, $33.
4Dark Lips
From berry to brown, dark lipstick—usually a staple of cooler months—is popping up everywhere. Although swiping on a brown shade might seem intimidating at first, it truly is the epitome of confidence with a bit of sass—which is why quite a few fierce celebs like Zendaya and Rihanna are fans of the look. Get the look with Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Birkin Brown, $32.
5Pink Cheeks
Trade in your contouring kit for some cheery pink blush this fall. A healthy flush of pink gives off a more “natural” vibe, and even mimics that pink glow the apples get after a little time out in the autumn breeze. Above, Behati pairs it perfectly with a bold red lip. Try Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Bold Blush in Obsessed, $30.
6Bold Lashes
Fall runways showed flared out, clump-free lashes (sometimes, sans eyeliner or shadow). You may not want to pile on the sparkly extensions on a normal weekday, but a lengthening mascara with a comb-like wand is perfect for getting pretty lashes that make eyes wider. Or maybe you want to dabble in falsies? Now’s the time to give it a try! We like CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara, $8.
7Graphic Eyeliner
Bold liner—oftentimes going way outside the lines, literally and figuratively—was big on the fall runways, adding a sharp, graphic element to the face. Dark, defined liner also popped up all over the VMA red carpet, in a more wearable, exaggerated cat-eye, on celebs like Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj. Try: Make Up For Ever Graphic Liner, $24.
