A laptop housed at the UCLA Special Collections Library contains the entire contents of The New Yorker essayist and intellectual Susan Sontag’s Power Mac G4 from the 1990s and early 2000s. The LA Review of Books (via the Cut) did a deep dive into Sontag’s complete email correspondence and what they found may surprise you: she subscribed to Sephora’s newsletter. Maybe looking at lipsticks eased the intensity of all that writing she did on AIDs, war and death.
Equally comforting (and revealing) are Sontag’s compulsive to-do lists of movies, chores, and books to “re-read.” Perhaps less surprising is her “small music library” that consists mostly of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel.
Susan Sontag: French music fan, Sephora shopper, and reminder that we all contain multitudes.
