This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the death of beloved singer Selena Quintanilla, and much to the thrill of her thousands of still-loyal fans, MAC has announced plans to launch a makeup line inspired by Selena’s vibrant signature look. According to NPR, the idea of a MAC line gained traction on social media with her fans earlier this year which prompted them to spring into action, launching a petition to the makeup company that ultimately gained 37,772 signatures. At the time, MAC responded politely but avoided committing to any projects. Yesterday, MAC’s senior vice president, James Gager, announced in a statement that a limited-edition capsule collection will launch in 2016:
“Selena’s talent and beauty, inside and out, have left a colorful, meaningful impact in the world that has continued to grow over the last two decades. We have heard the passion and enthusiasm from her fans and wholeheartedly agree that her legacy embodies MAC’s philosophy.”
MAC has the blessing and input of the late singer’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, who shared her excitement with Us Weekly:
“Helping to create this collection brings me back to all those late night conversations on our tour bus when she spoke of having her own makeup line one day. If Selena were here she would be beyond ecstatic to have this happening. History is being made.”
The brand hasn’t provided many details on what will be offered in the line, but fans have offered suggestions for colorful packaging to match Selena’s bright onstage attire, dark brow pencil, and white nail polish. Of course, the hotly anticipated star of the collection will likely be a tube of her famous brick-red lipstick.
Selena’s death was especially tragic — she was shot and killed at age 23 by the president of her own fan club. Her supporters have worked tirelessly to create a legacy that celebrates her life and that isn’t overshadowed by the brutal way she died, and this collection is a perfect way to contribute to that. Stars like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Marilyn Monroe and even Miss Piggy have had a MAC line of their own, so it’s about time Selena was added to the roster.
