There are some beauty products it seems like everyone and their mom is obsessed with. They are always on the bestsellers lists. They win the beauty awards, and you just can’t escape them.
But are these products really that great, or does everyone just have a fear of missing out? Is that new mascara life-changing, or does everyone want it because of the hype?
Let’s take a look at some of those beauty products the world seems to be obsessed with and see if they are really all that great or not.
Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder (Shop here)
There is no doubt that this cult-favorite powder is amazing. Makeup artists rave about it. It is great. There is no arguing that, but is it worth the hype? Maybe years ago it was, but several lower-priced alternatives have recently hit shelves. Not only are they more accessible and affordable, but they perform just as well, if not better. We aren’t saying you should avoid this product, but it is a bit overhyped with all the newcomers to the market.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer (Shop here)
Tarte’s concealer hit the market, and people went crazy. They couldn’t get enough of this full-coverage product. You couldn’t find a YouTube makeup tutorial that didn’t feature this product for a while. Sure, it offers excellent coverage and has this giant applicator that makes blending easier, but it wasn’t perfect. This product could get cakey under the eyes if not set properly. And for those with dry skin or acne scarring, it clung to patches and looked unflattering. Even though this concealer is so highly rated, it seems to work best for those with smooth, even, and normal skin types. For those with texture or dryness, it is just overhyped.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Precision Brow Pencil (Shop here)
Anastasia is THE brand for brows. It has every product you could ever dream of. But the Brow Wiz pencil just isn’t all that unique. It has a number of shades, is a thin pencil, mimics the look of natural brow hairs, and has a great spoolie, but almost every makeup brand has a version of this. Why spend upwards of $20 for something that gets used up so quickly? Brands like Maybelline, ELF, and NYX all have a version of this for a fraction of the price.
BeautyBlender Original Makeup Sponge (Shop here)
Upon its launch, the Beauty Blender took the makeup world by storm. There was no other way to apply makeup that left your skin looking naturally airbrushed. Brushes leave streaks. Reusable sponges didn’t buff the product properly. And using your hands just isn’t sanitary. The Beauty Blender changed the game, but not for long. Yes, it is the original, but that doesn’t make it the best. Going for $20 when you can only use it for so long before tossing it out makes this a luxury item. When brands like NYX, Wet n Wild, and ELF all have a makeup sponge that does more than compete but actually beats this one, it is hard to say it lives up to the hype.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (Shop here)
The Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara has been one of the highest-rated luxury mascaras ever made. Its unique hourglass-shaped brush and intense volume had makeup lovers obsessed. Of course, the product’s name has something to do with its appeal, but is it worth that hype? Sure, to some people, but anyone on a budget, no. An hourglass-shaped brush mascara is available from just about every drugstore makeup brand. You can find one from L’Oreal, Maybelline, CoverGirl, and even ELF. You can buy two or three tubes for what you would pay for one from Too Faced, and they have even better reviews.
