A study at the University of Oregon found that of 45 participants, those who were asked to read the print edition of the New York Times remembered more of the stories, topics and main points than those who read the New York Times website. Reading online opens us up to endless distractions like ads, related links, IMs and emails, and research shows that webpages can be more mentally taxing to read than physical pages. To get the most out of your online reading, resist the temptations of the internet and try to notice when you’re skimming instead of truly digging into the material.
