A recent study published in Psychological Science asked 181 pairs of identical twins and 166 pairs of fraternal twins to answer survey questions to determine their tendencies toward impulsive behavior and procrastinating. The findings indicated that both procrastination and impulsivity are heritable traits and, moreover, that there’s a complete genetic overlap between the two—people exhibited both or neither. The researchers think that procrastination may actually be a recent evolutionary outgrowth of impulsivity, and that both are related genetically to low goal attainment.
