In “Fifty Shades of Grey,” you see a whole lot of Dakota Johnson. (And not enough Jamie Dornan, amiright?) But apparently what you thought you learned about the actress’ grooming habits from all those pubic hair-filled shots was just a bit of Hollywood magic.
The New York Times published a detailed piece about shooting sex scenes, and what really goes on behind the camera to make actors more comfortable in a potentially awkward situation. Seamus McGarvey, the cinematographer of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” shared that during filming, Dornan had a cover over his penis and Johnson, a patch over her pubic area — which is pretty par for the course.
So after filming, it was decided that Anastasia would rock some pubes instead of being completely waxed and bare. “We were in the curious situation, in postproduction, of adding [pubic hair]. I wouldn’t say it was one of the highlights of my career, but it certainly was one of the most surreal scenarios,” McGarvey told the Times.

Since Brazilians became all the rage in the late 90s, going all bare down there has seemed to be a staying trend. A January 2015 study even found that 60% of college-aged men prefer their partners to be pubic hair-free. But there’s no one-size-fits-all method for how you choose to groom (or not groom). Going au naturale or getting waxed bare are both choices women should make for themselves. If Anastasia had been portrayed by Hollywood and porn standards of a perfectly shaven and waxed virgin, we wouldn’t have been surprised. But giving her a bush (albeit, electronically added) is a surprising move, which could be another big step — American Apparel took a big one last year — for pubic hair becoming mainstream again.
Also, don’t worry: some of that whipping scene was created post-production, too. And Dakota had a butt double. So rest assured, there were no Dakota Johnson butt cheeks harmed in the making of this movie. Phew.
